RSS (Really Simple Syndication)
is a method of delivering news and updated content from
web sites. RSS feeds deliver information in a format
called XML to be read by a service or program called
an 'aggregator' or 'reader'. By using an aggregator,
you can have news and updates from multiple sources
delivered to a single place on the web or on your desktop.
Two free, easy-to-use aggregators are Bloglines
and NewsGator.
Many others are also available.
Using RSS, where available, can
save you from needing to receive multiple e-mail alerts
and from needing to visit web sites to see if they have
been updated. We have added RSS feeds so that our users
can save time and receive updated information at their
convenience and in their preferred format.
Sign up for one of the aggregators
mentioned above (they're free) or choose another aggregator.
'Making Sense of RSS' is an excellent, step-by-step
guide to getting started with Bloglines written by Fran
Wilkie, NeLH Training Facilitator. The guide is available
to download here.
Once you are signed up, you will
want to add feeds. The URLs for our feeds are:
NPC news feed
eCAB wire feed
To add these feeds in Bloglines,
select My Feeds, then Add. Copy and paste each URL into
the box (one URL at a time) and click Subscribe.
To add these feeds in NewsGator,
select Add a Feed, then click on the 'URL & Import'
tab. Copy and paste each URL in the 'Feed URL' box,
then click the Add Feed button.
