Example of implementation of NMP
The use of non-medical prescribing within haematology encompasses two main areas of pharmacists’ practice: the management of long term drug therapy e.g. hydroxycarbamide in myloproliferative disorders, erythropoietin use in chronic anaemia and the care of patients with side effects from their chemotherapy e.g. mouth care regimens, nausea and vomiting.
Long term conditions are managed alongside consultant colleagues within the outpatient department. This extension of our service occurred when consulting rooms became available allowing pharmacists to augment the existing service by providing follow up clinic slots thus the medical staff to see more new patients. This service has been evaluated using a brief patient satisfaction survey, the results of which were incorporated into a poster presentation to the British Society Of Haematology Annual 2008. (The use of non-medical prescribers within haematology outpatient clinics is an efficient model to improve patient access to haematology services M Brazil, NM Butt, RK Dasgupta, DW Galvani, V Young)
The use of non medical prescribing for inpatients focuses mainly on symptom control. For example the management of mouth care – pain, bleeding, dry mouth etc – is once reviewed by the team left mainly in the hands of the pharmacist prescribers on the team who are considered to have the greatest expertise in this area as well as a working knowledge of available preparations. Prescribing in this area requires regular review of the patient and their ongoing symptoms.
