The Association for Nurse Prescribing (ANP)

For more than ten years, the Association for Nurse Prescribing (ANP) has been a leading voice campaigning for, and promoting, the role of nurse prescribing. The ANP provides nurses with support and education in order that they feel confident in their role. The ANP website contains news, events and information about non-medical prescribing and the ANP. For members, there is a range of resources including a community forum, where members can talk about current issues and ask advice, and educational resources.

NHS Clinical Knowledge Summaries (CKS) (formerly PRODIGY)

The NHS Clinical Knowledge Summaries are a reliable source of evidence-based information and practical 'know how' about the common conditions managed in primary care. They are aimed at healthcare professionals working in primary and first-contact care.

Clinical Management Plan Library online

Contains a searchable database of Clinical Management Plans contributed to the site by nurses or pharmacists who have already completed a Supplementary Prescribing course in the UK. The site encourages individuals to submit their CMPs for sharing with others.

Department of Health

The Department of Health (DH) exists to improve the health and wellbeing of people in England and provides strategic leadership to the NHS and social care organisations in England. It is responsible for leading and driving forward change in the NHS and social care and improving standards of public health in the UK.

Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA)

The MHRA is the government agency responsible for enforcing medicines legislation and ensuring medicines and medical devices work and are acceptably safe. They assess the safety, quality and efficacy of medicines, and authorise their sale or supply in the UK for human use.

National Electronic Library for Medicines (formerly Druginfozone)

NeLM is the largest medicines information portal for healthcare professionals in the NHS. It aims to promote the safe, effective and efficient use of medicines. It is a free service which is updated daily. The Non-Medical Prescribing Community Area contains teaching resources, support materials and national guidance and consultation document links

National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE)

NICE is the independent organisation responsible for providing national guidance on the promotion of good health and the prevention and treatment of ill health for those working in the NHS, local authorities and the wider public and voluntary sector. NICE also produces guidance on the use of new and existing medicines, treatments and procedures, and on the appropriate treatment and care of people with specific diseases and conditions within the NHS.

National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA)

The NPSA leads and contributes to improved, safe patient care by informing, supporting and influencing organisations and people working in the health sector. They have three divisions: National Reporting and Learning Service, National Clinical Assessment Service and the National Research Ethics Service.

Patient Group Directions

This is the national resource for England for both public and independent sector organisations that use or intend to use PGDs, and for healthcare professionals who work with PGDs or who are involved in their development or review.

Regulators

General Optical Council (GOC)

The GOC is the health and social care regulator for optometrists, dispensing opticians, student opticians and optical businesses in the UK. They set standards for optical education and training, performance and conduct and approve qualifications leading to registration. They also maintain a register of individuals who are qualified and fit to practise, train or carry on business as optometrists and dispensing opticians and investigate and act when this is impaired.

Health Professions Council (HPC)

The HPC are an independent, UK-wide health regulator, which sets standards of professional training, performance and conduct. They regulate a number of different health professionals including physiotherapists, radiographers, and chiropodists/podiatrists. Their site contains an online register allowing healthcare professional’s registration and prescribing status to be checked.

Nursing & Midwifery Council

The Nursing and Midwifery Council is an organisation set up by Parliament to protect the public by ensuring that nurses and midwives provide high standards of care to their patients and clients. It is the professional regulator for nurses and midwives. It establishes standards of education, training, conduct and performance.

Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RPSGB) is the professional and regulatory body for pharmacists in England, Scotland and Wales. The primary objectives of the Society are to lead, regulate, develop and represent the profession of pharmacy. Useful for clinical governance framework, links to university courses and to check the pharmacist register.

The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP)

The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy is the professional, educational and trade union body for the chartered physiotherapists, physiotherapy students and assistants in the UK. They lead and support all members in developing and promoting high quality innovative patient care and raise the profile of the profession and influence the health care agenda.

College of Optometrists

The College of Optometrists is the professional, scientific and examining body for optometry in the UK, working for the public benefit. It supports its members in all aspects of professional development; provides pre-registration training and assessment, continuous professional development opportunities, and advice and guidance on professional conduct and standards.

College of Pharmacy Practice

The College of Pharmacy Practice is an independent organisation of pharmacists, from all branches of the profession, whose objectives are to provide post-registration training and CPD, and to promote the highest professional standards to benefit patients and healthcare provision.

The Institute of Chiropodists and Podiatrists

The Institute seeks to serve the whole of the profession of chiropody, keeping abreast of all legislative developments, and representing its membership. Members undertake to adhere to a strict code of professional conduct.

Royal College of Nursing (RCN)

The RCN represents nurses and nursing, and lobby governments and others to develop and implement policy. They promote excellence in practice, educating nurses professionally and academically.

Society of Radiographers

The Society of Radiographers represents more than 90 per cent of the diagnostic and therapeutic radiographers in the UK. It is responsible for their professional, educational, public and workplace interests. The College of Radiographers is the charitable subsidiary of The Society and it exists to serve the public good. The College's objects are directed towards education, research and other activities in support of the science and practice of radiography. The Society and College aim to shape the healthcare agenda and lead opinion on a wide range of professional issues.
