Patient decision aids

NPC legacy site

Although no new Medicines and prescribing content will be published to the NPC legacy website, the extensive catalogue of existing publications, resources and e-learning materials will still be available to view and download for as long as the information contained within them remains accurate and up-to-date. All future Medicines and prescribing outputs will be published on the NICE website and signposted from the Medicines and prescribing homepage.

A patient decision aid (PDA) is a tool that presents evidence-based estimates of the benefits and risks of the available treatment options in sufficient detail so that patients are better able to judge their value.1,2 In contrast to health education materials, which simply provide broad background information, PDAs are tailored to patients' health status and help them to make specific, personal choices about their treatment.3 PDAs can be available in various formats such as leaflets, interactive media, video/DVD or audio tape.4 Importantly, they are not intended to replace the patient-practitioner interaction, rather to supplement or support it.4

Directory of PDAs
A directory of all the PDAs we have produced is provided here. You will also find some background information on PDAs and how to get the best out of them.

New 'Patient decision aids - Video'

We've made a short video which shows real GPs using some of our most popular PDAs in realistic, unscripted consultations with simulated patients. You can view the video online here.
