National Support Materials

Safer NSAID prescribing support materials

Changes/additions to materials:

MeReC Stop Press on NICE Clinical Guideline 59
NICE published its guidance on management of osteoarthritis in February 2008. The important changes are discussed in the MeReC Stop Press, which should be read in conjunction with the materials in this room of NPCi.

MeReC Rapid Review on glucosamine
Recent evidence around glucosamine has emerged and we have tried to put this into the context of the new NICE guidance – the MeReC Rapid Review on this should also be read.

Lumiracoxib licence suspended
On 19th November 2007, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) suspended the licence for Prexige (lumiracoxib) due to the safety concerns about possible liver damage for patients. More information is available from the MHRA website here.

Safer NSAID prescribing
The National Prescribing Centre has collated and published a range of resources to support organisations and individuals planning or already implementing their own safety initiatives on the prescribing of non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). This includes new summary information on safer ways to prescribe NSAIDs.

The materials relate to the use of all NSAIDs but, in particular focus on safer prescribing of those most commonly prescribed in England.

Materials are available through either our websites www.npc.co.uk and www.npc.nhs.uk or our new interactive learning resource NPCi (www.npci.org.uk). Check each of these regularly as we will be adding new materials on an ongoing basis.

Instructions: If you are experiencing problems using application software please contact your local IT helpdesk. The NPC cannot provide technical support to enable you to access these files.

Therapeutics Resources
The NPC's MeReC Extra 30 contains a new summary on the cardiovascular and gastrointestinal safety of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It highlights a need for increased vigilance by prescribers and patients when considering the use of some traditional anti-inflammatory painkillers to patients at risk of cardiovascular events, such as heart attack or stroke.

Additional therapeutics support materials
These materials are contained within NPCi, our interactive learning resource. To access the implementation resources you will need to return to the NPC website
