NPC Plus

Background

NPC Plus was formed in 2003 to respond to an increasing demand from PCTs and other NHS organisations for additional support. This element of the work programme allowed the NPC to develop and deliver more locally focused support to healthcare organisations over and above core activities.

Moving forward

To take account of the changing healthcare environment and further maximise opportunities for delivering support packages. NPC Plus has now entered into a new formal partnership with Keele University.

NPC Plus offers both pre-defined and tailored support packages to commissioners, providers and individuals.

If you have any queries regarding NPC Plus please contact the office on 01782 584798. Please direct post to: NPC Plus, Med IC4, Keele University Science and Business Park, Keele, Staffordshire, ST5 5NL.

Therapeutic workshops for nurses

We have developed a model for the structured local delivery of good quality, evidence-based workshops for nurses. Commissioning organisations can target and deliver individual therapeutic workshops according to local needs. The current topics include chronic disease management, skin care, and wound care. These workshops are applicable to all nurses practising within the relevant clinical areas.

Flexible therapeutics training for other health care professionals

The volume of published research papers is becoming increasingly daunting. We have distilled the current evidence base on key therapeutic topics into a number of workshops, which are suitable for single-profession or multi-professional audiences of approximately 25-30 delegates. The topics currently available are:

  • Management of common infections in primary care
  • Type II diabetes (including obesity)
  • Hypertension
  • Lipids
  • Use of NSAIDs
  • Depression
  • Dyspepsia
  • Asthma

Individual modules will support the following:

  • PCTs

  • Dispensing practices
  • Community pharmacies
  • Nurses and midwifes

Using evidence to guide practice

The NPC has drawn on its experience of teaching this complex topic to produce an interactive and self-directed e-learning package. This package is aimed at any busy healthcare professional who wants to improve their understanding of these issues. The five modules cover the influences on prescribing, the basic concepts of clinical epidemiology, some of the pitfalls in interpreting diagnostic tests, and the principles of Information Mastery. The package is designed so that you can learn at a pace and time to suit you.

Patient Group Directions (PGDs) training and guidance

The proper use of PGDs is now integral to the developing prescribing and medicines management agenda. A training resource is being developed to promote the safe and effective use of PGDs in response to many concerns about the level of understanding of the scope and context of PGDs.

The NPC has also developed a guide to the use of PGDs, including a competency framework.
