Prescribing Nurse Support (Part 1) -
Educational Information

w.gif (1087 bytes) ith the beginning of the implementation of nurse prescribing nationally, the NPC was commissioned to develop and
disseminate prescribing support information for newly qualified nurse prescribers and nurse educators. Three nurses were recruited in August 1998 to design and produce seven Prescribing Nurse bulletins, six training resource packs and 24 prescribing summary fact sheets.

Topics chosen for the bulletins were in line with the main areas of the Nurse Prescribers' Formulary (see below). Training resource packs are to be centred around each bulletin exploring the main issues in more depth. These will provide tutors with a framework for teaching, topics for individual consideration and group discussion, presentation and handout materials and supporting literature.

Prescribing summary fact sheets will focus on practical prescribing and patient counselling information for certain drugs, therapeutic groups of dressings/appliances, and specific prescribing issues in certain conditions, for example, pregnancy.

By the end of March 1999, all nurses who had been trained to prescribe during pilot site projects or during 1998/99 had been sent the first bulletin with a ring binder for storage. In addition, project leads in health authorities and trusts had received the same materials for onward distribution to nurses due to receive training during 1999/2000.

The second bulletin was also completed and ready for distribution, with the third and fourth bulletins and first three resource packs in development. All materials are to be completed by October 1999.
