Aim and Objectives of the NPC

Aim

"To inform, facilitate and support the promotion of high quality, cost-effective prescribing through a co-ordinated programme of activities for health authorities (HAs), medical and pharmaceutical advisers, and GPs".

Objectives

To develop a co-ordinated programme of activities covering the following five main areas of work:

  • Information on Medicines
  • Training and Education
  • Dissemination of Good Practice
  • Information Technology
  • Informing Research and Initiatives

This is to be achieved by:

  • using efficiently the professional, managerial and administrative expertise of the NPC in conjunction with prudent use of its financial resources
  • commissioning work, where appropriate, from external individuals and bodies who demonstrate possession of relevant knowledge and expertise, and an ability to deliver value for money
  • developing and maintaining collaborative links with a wide range of relevant national, regional and local bodies along with other professional groups
  • continuing the strong working relationships with key elements of the National Health Service (NHS) Executive ensuring that a clear understanding of strategic direction and policy development is maintained
  • keeping up to date with important international, national, regional and local initiatives, and developments which impact on the prescribing agenda
  • developing and maintaining an informal, representative communication and advisory framework to ensure the NPC's programme of activities continues to reflect the needs of its key customers
